About QYLD
QYLD sells at-the-money covered call options on the entire Nasdaq-100 index every month. This generates high option premium income, which is distributed as monthly dividends. The strategy caps all upside potential because the call options are sold at-the-money.
QYLD's headline yield is among the highest of any ETF, but the total return tells a different story. Because the fund participates in nearly all downside but almost none of the upside, the share price (NAV) has declined significantly since inception. A substantial portion of the distribution is return of capital rather than earned income. FIRE investors should understand this distinction before building a portfolio around QYLD's yield.
