DRIP vs Cash Dividends: The Compounding Difference Over 10 Years
TL;DR
Dividend reinvestment (DRIP) dramatically outperforms taking cash over long periods. A $50,000 SCHD position with DRIP generates roughly 35-40% more income after 10 years than the same position taking cash because each reinvested dividend buys more shares, which earn more dividends.
The Lockheed Story That Went Viral
A post on r/dividends about $432 invested in Lockheed Martin in 2012 growing to $15,000 by 2024 with DRIP received 2,654 upvotes. That's an individual stock with exceptional performance. But the principle applies to ETFs too.
SCHD: DRIP vs Cash Over 10 Years
Starting with $50,000 in SCHD, no additional contributions:
- Year 1 income: ~$1,700 → Year 10 income: ~$4,500
- Total dividends received: ~$28,000
- Portfolio value: ~$95,000
- Year 1 income: ~$1,700 → Year 10 income: ~$3,200
- Total dividends received: ~$23,000
- Portfolio value: ~$72,000
The difference: DRIP generates roughly 35% more annual income by year 10, and the portfolio is worth roughly 30% more. The gap widens every year.
Why DRIP Wins
Each dividend payment buys fractional shares. Those shares earn their own dividends next quarter. Those new dividends buy more shares. Each cycle, your share count grows, your next dividend is larger, which buys even more shares. Growth on top of growth.
When NOT to DRIP
In retirement: If you need the income for living expenses, take the cash. That's the whole point.
In taxable accounts (maybe): Reinvested dividends are still taxed as income. Some investors prefer to take cash and direct it where they want, toward tax-loss harvesting or rebalancing.
The Rule of Thumb
- Accumulation phase (10+ years from FIRE): DRIP everything. Let compounding work.
- Approaching FIRE (3-5 years out): Start transitioning some positions to cash dividends.
- In FIRE: Take cash for expenses. DRIP any excess.
